BOARD/STAFF ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. First and foremost, the board has the role of Governance; to hold the organization in trust and protect for the public interest; to guard and direct the organization’s actions to move toward stated mission, vision and values.

The governance role is exclusively a group decision process. No one board member or board committee governs; it is the full board that acts. Governance responsibilities include:

• determine policy
• hire, supervise, support, evaluate and fire executive director
• fiscal oversight: budget approval & modification, establishing
fiscal policies • establish priorities and allocate resources
• ensure legal & contractual compliance

2. Board officers & committees and staff support the organization.
Responsibilities include:
• formulate policy
• select, train & evaluate board
• fundraising
• community relations
• budget development and fiscal reporting

3. Executive Director and staff responsibilities include:
• program and property management
• personnel administration
• agency operations

The Alliance of New York State Arts Organizations has a 28-year history as New York's primary service association for community based arts and cultural organizations. The Alliance provides leadership and vision, and delivers services, resources and tools that strengthen community cultural organizations. The Alliance monitors, informs and mobilizes the field on statewide and national issues affecting the arts and assists local arts agencies in building community support and developing effective grassroots public policy.
