Welcome to: Deborah Jones who had been named the Executive Director of Arts Center/ Old Forge

Congratulations to our Executive Director, Judith Kaufman Weiner, who is receiving the First Annual Arts Advocate Award from Suffolk County, NY.

ARTS DAY IN ALBANY IS LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY: TUESDAY MARCH 9, 2004

Join your colleagues from all over the state as we rally in support of the cultural community. We are hoping for a $4,000,000 increase to the New York State Council on the Arts Budget his year and your participation will make a difference. Activities will take place between 9 and 4. To sign up, click here.

Headquarters will be in "The Well" of the Legislative Office Building in Albany which will provide a place to gather, network, pick up talking points, peruse exhibits and view performances. The Arts Day Hearing with celebrities will take place at 11 am in Hearing Room A.

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO BRING PHOTO ID. Thorough security procedures at the State Capital are in place. When entering the office buildings, one must produce photo ID. Bags are subject to search and all pass through check-points similar to the airports. During the day the concourse lines to enter the buildings are very long. Please plan accodingly and add addtional time. The Entrance to the New York State Capital Building on State Street is slightly more efficient and we recommend access at that point. Once you are admitted there, you can pass between the buildings seamlessly.

As a final reminder, we have reserved parking in the Cathedral Lot on Madison Street. These spaces much be prepaid and are $7/space. Please contack Amy Wippert at the Alliance office awippert@thealliancenys.org or call (631) 298-1234 to secure your spot(s).

FROM THE UPSTATE OFFICE Martha E. Strodel Director Rural Arts Program

The most recent Board Cafe (2/25/04) is the first in a special edition for Executive Directors. They will offer 3 per year that focus on staff issues. In this issue, they request information about titles; executive director, president, CEO, etc. I know this is of interest to a number of people in our field; if you would like to share your thoughts on this, email them at: boardcafe@compasspoint.org. They will publish the results in an upcoming
issue.

The main "entrée" for this issue is on Micromanagement. It explores it from both the director's and the board's perspective, with some helpful suggestions to deal with "micromanagement" as a problem for a nonprofit. Board Cafe also announces a new feature in the February issue: The Board Cafe Emporium, a listing of different resources in each issue, many of them free. For example:

BoardNetUSA.org; a national online service free to Board Cafe subscribers. It's a clearing house for new board members; if you are looking for new board members, you can advertise free for candidates. Or, if you are looking to join a board, you can "shop" here for nonprofits in your area seeking board members.

NetworkForGood is a quick and free way (through corporate sponsors) to make it possible for people to make donations to your organization via the web. They suggest you won't raise lots of money this way, but if you already have a website, you can add this feature as another potential way to raise
monies.

While the Board Cafe is generally directed toward board members, I find that each issue has helpful information for both board members and staff. You can sign up for a free email subscription. Send a blank e-mail message to: boardcafe-on@lists.compasspoint.org. It might also be helpful to assign one board member to sign up for a subscription and report to the board on any relevant articles at your board meetings.

JOB BOARD

The Village of Arts and Humanities (the Village) is a private nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to revitalizing its host neighborhood of North Philadelphia through the arts. What began in 1986 as a summer project to engage neighborhood children in park building has grown into a major provider of arts-inspired programs in education, land transformation, construction, and economic development. While thoroughly rooted in the very low-income community it serves, the Village has been recognized both locally and nationally as a successful model for engaging residents, especially youth, in the process of rebuilding their neighborhood.

Seeking a motivated, experienced, and passionate person to continue to build upon our strong foundation of arts-based programming and help us carry out our mission in the coming years as our Executive Director. For further information contact: village@villagearts.org or call (215) 225-7830. The Village of Arts and Humanities
2544 Germantown Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19133
