COMMUNITY E-INSTITUTE

The Community E-Institute kicks off October 5, 6, and 7 on the Cornell University Campus in Ithaca. Designed for arts administrators, board members, business and government leaders who would like to gain new perspectives and strategies for community organizing, the participants will analyze strategic challenges based on the needs and assets of their communities. They will learn to motivate and mobilize others to realize goals and objectives, influence strategies, evaluate human and financial resources, negotiate for mutual gain, and build coalitions and partnerships.

We are grateful to The Rockefeller Foundation for their very generous support, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the New York State Council on the Arts, and The Altria Group, Inc.

FROM THE UPSTATE OFFICE: Martha Strodel, Director Rural Arts Program

On October 14th, the Rurals Task Force will pioneer use of Online Live to begin review of the Rural Arts Program... its current services and how the program can be modified to address the forseeable needs of our Partnership. The Task Force members will be online and on the phone simultaneously; we will be "meeting" in real time. The technology will also allow us to share files and desktops. Task force members are: Annette Clarke, Elaine Giguere, Caroline Rubino, Hilary Oak, Kay Stamer and Julia Tunstall. The results will be posted to the Rurals listserv to encourage wider response and ideas, and the process will be repeated in another Online Live meeting and listserv posting in late fall.

My new email address is: MSTRODEL@nycap.rr.com Note that MSTRODEL is all caps.

Reminders:
* The Lean on Me mentoring program provides travel subsidy for directors of Rural Partner organizations to visit other Rurals. The intention is to encourage networking and best practices.
* Partial subsidies are available for use of outside consultants by Rural Partners. For more information on either of these services, contact me at 518-623-2508.

CREATIVE ECONOMY INITIATIVES IN UPSTATE NEW YORK: A REASEARCH PROJECT

The Alliance has been providing resources and support to THE CORNELL UNIVERSITY RESEARCH TEAM of Professor Susan Christopherson, Department of City and Regional Planning Cornell University and Professor Suzanne Loker, Department of Textiles and Apparel Cornell University. They are examining the potential for creative economy initiatives in upstate New York and addressing how they can be translated into strategies for community and regional development, linking the arts and the creative process to a wider range of economic activities. The relationships between Upstate New York arts organizations and Colleges and Universities are being investigated to identify existing strategies and models for using creative activities in economic development and as ways to attract and retain skilled professionals. They will determine how local rural designers leverage arts and culture to achieve economic development through linkages to other designers, area colleges and universities, and rural communities.

A number of the Upstate Arts Council Directors have been interviewed for this project. As more data becomes available, we will distribute it to our members.
